A Very Sweet Piano Baby. A sweet little girl is wondering. Can my puppy read? As he stares quite convincingly at her book.. C 1900 Victorian Era. A very rare piece from our own collection. Beautifully painted and modeled, this piece is Heubach quality. Though there is no maker’s mark. Impressed on the front base. “You Can’t Read”. A BIG piece, striking on display. 12 x 12 inches. Heavy, solid, it weighs over 7. And I’m happy to say it’s in excellent condition as well, no damage at all. What is a piano baby? As the name suggests, these were porcelain babies that lived on top of pianos. During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, every well-appointed parlor had a piano. And every respectable piano wore a fancy shawl, or piano drapery. Were often works of art in themselves: embroidered silk or woven tapestries with. Tassels or handmade lace edging. Piano babies sat on top of the shawl. Ensuring that the shawl did. Not slide off the piano, because. A proper piano must never drop its shawl.. The dog, a lab or collie, has beautifully carved fur; it is so lifelike, you almost want to reach out and stroke it. Her companion sister piece shown below is also available. They have matching dresses and display together beautifully. Haven’t had time to list yet, but please inquire if interested. I have several other piano babies for sale. Here’s one, it’s a large 15. See my other listings for more. All photos are taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color. Though monitor colors may vary. These are items from my own collection. I’ve taken great care to provide an accurate description and have provided many large clear photos. The high resolution photos are part of the description. A Gorgeous Huge Piano Baby. Two Sisters and Their Brother. Isn’t this a wonderful piece? A fine old Victorian-era German trio of piano babies at play. Marching happily along the beach, this little group exudes the contentment. Of a perfect carefree childhood day. The sisters grasp each other’s hands. As their hair blows in the wind. Their brother in his cute sailor shirt has manufactory holes. I’ve made him a little fishing pole to hold – it’s made from a painted. Wood dowel and some hemp- fiber twine. This piece is unmarked though it’s Heubach quality, with amazing modeling and painting. Intaglio eyes, two stroke brows and lids, carved open mouths, the usual lovely German doll faces. Heavy, solid, it weights over 7 pounds! And I’m happy to say it’s in excellent condition as well, with just a slight bit of gold rub to the detailing on the clothes, and a few tiny inconspicuous firing flaws which you always find on these old German bisques. (illustration not included in sale). Inspired by this Victorian painting called Seahorses. The children are using their imaginations and playing as children do. The boy is imagining he is riding a cart pulled by horses; his sisters have happily stepped into this role. Since they are at the sea, the girls are “sea” horses. The boy has tied rope to the girls’ dresses and they all seem to be having a great time playing this make-believe game. It would be fun to set the statue up the same way; there are factory holes in the boy’s hands and also under both girls’ arms meant for just this purpose. Quality workmanship – look at the carefully carved detailing on the woven-straw hat. And note how the red strap is artfully threaded through an opening in the beautifully modeled hand. Four Piano Babies in a Basket C 1910. This one is the crème de la crème. Four sweet babies at play have set up the perfect hiding place in an old luggage basket! The sculpting and painting on this piece are superb. The best of old German workmanship by the celebrated doll manufactory Gebruder Heubach, active in Thuringia Germany from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. These sweet little doll faces are to die for with deeply carved intaglio eyes painted two shades of blue, and a raised white beaded enamel dot for the light in their eyes. Blushed, dimpled chubby cheeks and elbows. Feathered blonde brows, deeply carved open mouths. Angel-wing upper lips and white enamel baby teeth, just the top two teeth, on the two tag-along babies on the sides, making them about 1 year old. Heubach at its best. Impressed Gebruder Heubach sunburst mark on base. Large, rarely seen size: 7 tall x 6 deep x 10 long. These hardly ever come to market in this large size and with this. I’ve seen this box fairly often in smaller sizes. With modeling and painting that is good, but doesn’t come. Anywhere close to this larger top-of-the-line model; this piece is. Top tier, for the discriminating collector who wants the best. Ref: similar smaller box in Heubach Character Dolls and Figurines. Condition- some small tight firing lines tucked away here and there; they’re stable, not noticeable and a normal part of the firing process for complex antique figures like this. Two fingers on the side baby have professional repair, not apparent on display, only found them when I was studying the piece with a magnifier: pinky and index finger, see next two photos. Overall excellent and ready for display. Photos taken with daylight bulbs for accurate color. Though monitor colors may vary.
