DIVINE TIMEWORN ANTIQUE GERMAN DOLL AUTOMATON BISQUE HEAD GLASS EYES c1890

DIVINE TIMEWORN ANTIQUE GERMAN DOLL AUTOMATON BISQUE HEAD GLASS EYES c1890. This is a fabulous timeworn rare confection from the late 1800s. As you will see I have left her just as she was unwrapped from tissue paper after many years being stored away. Her face will clean as required but I chose to leave her untouched or as the French say ” dans son jus”. Not just a doll but she was an AUTOMATON and from what I can see if you press the wooden plate on her chest her arms would close to clash the cymbals and her head nodded forwards. This action still works although she has lost the other cymbal. The bisque head has no cracks or chips, she has blue glass eyes and an open mouth. The back of the head has a marking: the word’GERMANY’ and the model no:’5/0′. Apart from those two markings I can find no others which may assist in identifying the actual maker. Someone suggested SIMON & HALBIG but I cannot be certain. Her silk clothes are timeworn with age, she wears pale blue frilled breeches and a light pink jacket trimmed with a fine lawn frill. The same lawn frill trims the breeches. Her felt hat is all intact and she has a little gilded button at the front. At the neckline is a frill of tulle. As the clothing is distressed it is possible to see within. The’body’ is formed from a rectangular piece of wood attached to which are the metal wire pieces which assist in its movement. The’neck’ is made of a small, cylindrical-shaped piece of wood attached to which at its base is a small wire loop no longer attached to the main wooden piece which would have allowed the head to’nod’ up and down each time the hands were clapped together. The upper legs and arms are each made from one piece of coiled wire to which is attached shaped pieces of wood for the wrists/hands and for the calves/shoes. The playing of the cymbals and the nodding of the head works by pressing onto the rectangular piece of wood in the dolls’ chest. This bring the two hands together to’bang’ the cymbals – whilst at the same time’nods’ the head. One of the cymbals has long gone but the wooden hand remains. The wooden legs have painted shoes. An original antique doll for any doll / automaton collector or it would make a superb interiors piece in timeworn chateau collection. Please remember she has not been cleaned at all and left just as she was unpacked. The face will clean amazingly well!
